As you know there was a pretty long stretch of dead air before the most recent posts, and to be perfectly honest I had sort of planned to just quit posting and mysteriously fade into the ether...but a certain Canadian Bar-B-Q expert inspired me to give it a few more gos. And on top of that it would be rude to slip out without saying goodbye.

I always marveled at friends that worked to really craft and perfect songs...changing the lyrics, adding a bridge...letting a song marinate over a long period of time. I never had the patience or skill to do that, primarily as a result of my training with the Rouch brothers. My most valuable trait as a lyricist/vocal melodist was my ability to react to a piece of music quickly and I rarely went back and adjusted things. On to the next one!

The result of that is quantity, and there I take a back seat to no one—-but after a few thousand songs it becomes difficult to discern quality and that is a rubicon I crossed long ago. I have a love/hate relationship with every song I’ve ever written and that’s a pretty big part of what has kept me at it for so long. The songs featured in the mysterious basement from the beginning have been the work of a hobbyist enjoying the therapeutic qualities of songwriting and in retrospect it was presumptuous to think something like that would be interesting to anybody.

But for a few of you anyway, at least intermittently, it was—-and for that I am grateful. You (and I) know who you are.

So I’m going to give it a rest for a while. Maybe I’ll give the craft/perfect approach a whirl and try to get my lyric writing chops to a more interesting place. In any case I won’t be posting them on the internet anymore. However if any of you get curious and want to see if I’m back at it, feel free to email me at beadog@bellsouth.net and I’ll let you know. Adios y’all!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3307932890995885167.post-88412710924694935462022-04-13T16:36:00.002-07:002022-04-13T16:36:49.112-07:00GBPUT

Did you realize 93 out of 100 blog perusers currently or at some point in the past have owned, stolen, or repaired one of these leaky-but-lovely machines? In fact up to 78% of the cars you see on the road are, in reality, vintage Triumph motorcycles cleverly disguised as cars. I shit you not...

...but first, here's a couple of those musicy-type doo-dads that I'm so fond of tossing together:

The first is a recent one unimaginatively entitled "Tomorrow" and features Sir Arthur Conan Doyle behind his sparkly trap kit. Secondly we have a messy sounding thing from 2010 called "Truth Serum", somewhat reminiscent of an obscure track birthed during the recording of "This Year's Model" when Elvis Costello and the Attractions had the misfortune of being served some rancid Eel Pie for tea. Elvis and the drummer guy became too ill to record so the bass guy and the organ guy completed the session by using a cheap beat box for percussion and enlisting the talents of Tony Bennett (still recovering from a serious head injury) as lead vocalist.

Elvis was not amused.

text-align: center;">

Like that post title? Thought I'd dazzle you all with my still-potent rhyming skills. Eminem, Schmeminem...

Oh, did you all know that the Replacements, before going with the whole Beatles tribute/mockery theme, considered naming their last indie record England Schmengland? I still get tickled thinking about that.

Speaking of records, I bet you all are dying to know how my cheap vinyl addiction is going, am I right? Well, for the most part I'm doing much better although yesterday I did buy a really sorry copy of The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles just in case magic mushrooms are decriminalized in the future. I also found about 5 or 6 bluegrass-oriented albums a few weeks ago that were in pristine shape so I done been a' whooping it up to some of that business. However, two of my favorite recently-acquired less-than-great albums were cut by the legendary bass players of two of the greatest 60's rawk-n-roll groups. The records? Monkey Grip from Bill Wyman and Rigor Mortis Sets In by the late John Entwistle. Now I understand most of you will never hear these records, and if you do, you probably won't choose to hear them twice. I, on the other hand, have given them multiple spins and will give them more because I'm curious and easily amused. Not to mention the fact that the one thing I've learned from my indiscriminate vinyl consumption is that my first impressions are rarely accurate when it comes to these things. Hell it took me over 40 years to decide that Black and Blue is closer to Sticky Fingers than Goat's Head Soup. That said, I'm pretty sure neither of these is gonna' work it's way into my desert isle list. Still, here are a few anecdotes concerning these wax slabs, starting with the Bill Wyman disc:

1.) Features a pretty stellar group of players including Lowell George, Dr. John, Leon Russell, Danny Kortchmar, Wayne Perkins, Byron Berline, John McEuen, Betty Wright, Ringo-Fucking-Starr, and others.

2.) His singing is not particularly compelling but he obviously knows it. His bass sounds outstanding.

3.) It has a song about pussy called..."Pussy". With a banjo on it.

As for the Ox's effort:

1.) Covers Little Richard and Elvis, not to mention himself (My Wife).

2.) Does another 50's cover "Mr. Bass Man" which is just fucking ridiculously cornball and seems totally out of place. I can only assume he dug the title.

3.) Allegedly spent ten grand on studio time and 4 grand on liquor while making this record-which sounds about right.

So, I admit it...I get a kick out of both of these odd little records for very different reasons and this why I have a couple of thousand records in the ol' Mysterious Basement. I'm easily amused, alright? So I guess my cheap vinyl addiction isn't any better at all is it? In fact, it may be incurable! Damn...

Okay, enough with the chit-chat...You came here for iffy musical what-not and that's exactly what I'm a-gonna provide you, right? Right!

Let's start with your least favorite of all...recent material. This one's called "Rain Is Sweet" and if you refuse to listen then you're just a big, mean, dumbhead.

Next is something from the eighties...Clunky guitar, crude beatbox, whiney vocal...you know...MAGIC!

And lastly here's something I found in the digital closet while hunting for live stuff...These songs are from 2016 when I was cutting up existing music, splicing it together in various ways, and augmenting it with vocals and various instrumentation. This kind of thing is not allowed on the Audiomack deal so if you want to check it out you'll need to download the 23(!!) song zip file of mp3s. I think I may have posted some of this in '16 but I remixed 'em all because the mixes were repulsive. I actually like some of this really well but as I said...I'm easily amused.

 DOWNLOAD CUT AND PASTE
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3307932890995885167.post-8096702749392581042021-06-22T20:23:00.000-07:002021-06-22T20:23:37.744-07:00Very Well

Next in the historical category we have a 90's 8-track reel-to-reel recording entitled Insipid Novel. Sometime during that decade Kelly upgraded from his Teac 4-track reel recorder to an 8-track unit. The brand escapes me but I do recall it used quarter inch tape. Kelly held many recording sessions on that thing, inviting various folks to come over and see what we could come up with. This song comes from a session that features mandolin on a bunch of tracks which was quite unusual. I'm almost certain it was Barry Sell playing it since he's really the only guy in our orbit that was reasonably proficient on the instrument. Other than that I have no idea who plays on it other than Kelly.

One last blast from the not-quite-as-distant past is one I ran across while digging out and organizing my various live recordings at the behest of my boy Mike Roeder of the Time To Play B-Sides website (check it out). It's a version of Shit for Brains done with the short-lived Coventry Climax group that featured original Liquor Cabinet alums Mike Gibson and Rob Veal, Possibilities drummer Matt Lane, and best-bass-player-ever John Mills. In this version something is a little off about it which causes me to sing it in an unusual way. For whatever reason it struck me a kinda' cool.Your mileage may vary.

Lastly, a recent one called I Fall Alone which I kinda'/sorta' got the idea for after drinking whisky and listening to Chet Baker. Or was it Herb Alpert? Hmmmm...

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3307932890995885167.post-91387044576772147372021-05-03T20:04:00.000-07:002021-05-03T20:04:52.073-07:00Somebody Let Me Down

What we have here is a vinyl rip of the Lava Treatment "Lake Eerie" LP made all the way back in 1987. As you may know, some of the songs made their way to the "Bulk" record but I've left them on here for context. While I sang and wrote lyrics and Kelly wrote music and played guitar, most of this was done by Jeb Baldwin who recorded and mixed it as well as playing a shitload of instruments and programing the Drumulator ('member those?). The real drums were played by his brother Greg except for the ones on "Shrunken Head" which were tapped by Steven Cobb (who I hear went on to be a legendary snowboard or skateboard maker or something like that). My copy is fairly clean but there are some pops and clicks and whatnot since this was probably the first time it's been played since the 80's (I've had it about10 years but I've never had the guts to put it on before now).

GET THE ZIPPED MP3 FILES HERE

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3307932890995885167.post-49529781534077966722021-04-03T18:47:00.000-07:002021-04-03T18:47:02.291-07:00Trouble With Words

Tod and one of his other roommates, Terry Jinks, was in a band with Vic Chesnutt called the La-Di-Das. They lived in a big, crumbling two-story brick house off Lexington Road. The house was surrounded by pines, kudzu, and bamboo and over time it came to be known as the Nasty Castle. The lack of neighbors made it natural for people who liked to play drums and electric guitars. Eventually, I moved in.

At some point, this kid (wasn't much more than a teenager) started showing up. I'm pretty sure Tod brought him out initially but it seems like all of a sudden...there he was. Turns out he was a guitar player. A really, really, good guitar player. And he liked to get liquored up and jam and write songs and play with 4-track cassette recorders. He was a natural for our little crew.

Well, that kid was David Philips and earlier this week Dave passed away in Los Angeles, California after battling cancer. He fought it a long fucking time so I knew it was coming. But now it's here.

For a while I was lucky enough to play in a band with Dave and I can still remember what it was like. I remember him laying into that gold top and feeling the BOOM and the song would just TAKE OFF!! It was pretty damned exciting. And now not me, or anybody else will get to see or feel that ever again...and that's JUST NOT FUCKING RIGHT...but that's how it is.

But he's done with the chemo and doctors and all the rest of it now and he is at peace. It's REALLY hard for those of us that love him, and we know he didn't want to leave us-but he had to. And it doesn't make any sense. But it never does. It never will.

I found some old pictures and even some old unfinished songs that I'm going share with you. All I ask is that you keep Dave in your hearts and if you ever got to see him play, man...you really saw something.

 DAVE DEMOS

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; As I implied, the recording was made with the mic of a Super Eight film camera so the sound is, appropriately, shitty. I am posting it unedited and I will post the film portion on the same day the first Boston terrier is issued a driver's license.

Incidentally, this mess was made by the original line-up of the group which included 3/4 of the Dashboard Saviors as the (ha!) rhythm section and represents a time where Kelly was strictly tickling the ivories while huffing on stogies and wearing a Dracula cape. Fun times! Mercifully, I am fairly inaudible and my failed George Jones/Nick Cave synthesis only provides minor irritation. Dave sounds awesome as per usual.

Tracklist:

1. Whine

2. And now for your amusement I begin my carefully curated archival materials
series wherein I present recordings dating back to the early eighties and
possibly even the late seventies. The works are crude and amateurish but that
has never stopped any of you in the past, now has it? Not for the faint of heart
however.

Three songs have been combined into one mp3. They are as follows:

1.Built From Sratch - features what appears to be a cheap keyboard beatbox
accompanied by an epileptic, carelessly tuned guitar and boozy croon vocal.
Appears to employ the two cassette deck recording method which should put it in
the late 70's-early 80's period.

2. Good Idea - Appears to be recorded live to
casette. Possibly improvised lyric. Most likely 80's.

3. Wondering About The
Next Life - Congested vocal and keyboard recorded live to tape. Improvised keys,
pre-existing lyric. Done at the Nasty Castle house around the same time period
as some of the Bulk stuff, early 90's.
